Fujiko and Disney Channel Asia

In early November 2012, Disney Channel Asia announced a promo for an English dub of one of Fujiko's anime, this production was animated by Shin-Ei Animation and aired on TV Asahi in Japan in the late 80s and early 90s. [1]
During 2012 to 2014, one of the notable projects of Makati-based SDI Media Philippines was dubbing several foreign series including Filipino Dub of Ultimate Spider-Man as well as the English Dub of Grachi, a Latin American live action produced by Nickelodeon. Among the dubs they were commissioned to dub was the English dub of Chimpui, SDI Media had previously collaborated with Disney to supply English dubs for their South East Asia broadcasts. [2]
The Chimpui broadcast was promoted by several TV networks in South East Asia such as the Philippine network MyCATV (now known as Asian Vision) who announced that a Chimpui dub would be aired on Disney's regional channel for Asia in mid-October 2012. [3]
In addition, the now defunct Indonesian TV channel “Aora” also promoted the Chimpui marathon held in January 2013. [4] According to the schedule of several television stations in South East Asia, Chimpui was broadcast at 1:30 PM, as an additional note unrelated to Fujiko is that the schedule provided by Panabo Satellite Cable Television located in Davao, Philippines; indicated that after the broadcast of Chimpui, Disney Channel Philippines began broadcasting the English Dub of The Cat Returns (2002). In June 2013, Chimpui stopped airing on Disney Channel Asia. In late March 2014, it was reported that Disney Channel Asia had started broadcasting some episodes of the anime Perman and later in April 2014, Disney Channel Asia announced that it was going to broadcast the series in Malaysia through Astro Channel 615, although this was not the first time to localize the anime in Malaysia, one thing to note is that the first country in South East Asia to receive episodes of Perman and Ninja Hattori through Disney Channel was the Philippines, the country where the English Dubs of Fujiko's two anime were made. [6] The anime was previously aired with a Malay dub on TV9 starting from 2011. [7]
At the end of May 2014, BiG TV Indonesia promoted Perman's broadcasts in the country specifically on Channel 461. [8] Additionally I was able to find some information about the Disney Channel Asia broadcast in Cambodia, where according to information provided by TV Guide in May 2014, Perman was being aired in Cambodia at 10:00 PM (22:00) and as much of the Disney Channel Asia programming was available for both OneTV and Cambodia Cable Television (CCTV). In September 2014, Disney Channel Asia's regional channels in the Philippines and Malaysia began airing “Doraemon: Nobita's Great Adventure in the South Seas”,[10] other countries in South East Asia received different programming. In addition, this movie also aired on Disney XD. In the same month, the Indonesian television network “Parabola Orange TV” also promoted the broadcasting of “Ninja Hattori” on Disney Channel Asia, which was to be aired at 6:00 AM (18:00) for Indonesia.[11]
In late 2014 and mid-2015, Disney Channel Asia was to change part of its schedule, where DCA gradually replaced several cartoons produced by Xilam Animation, including “Zig & Sharko” and “Oggy and the Cockroaches” with anime produced by Shin Ei Animation. This was noted by the Philippine blog “From the Tube” which noted that the broadcast of Oggy was simultaneously aired in the Philippines by both Disney Channel and Cartoon Network.[12]
Censorship
Perman's episode 40 called “The home run ball” (Japanese: ホームランボールはぼくのもの) was partially censored especially the final scenes of the episode where it involves the main characters fighting criminals using firearms, most of the scenes were cut and the few frames where it is possible to see a gun have been blurred out.
Localization
Although Disney Channel Asia's broadcasts of much of the Fujiko Anime were dubbed into Filipino English, there is video evidence that the bumpers and promotional cuts of both Ninja Hattori and Perman were available for different local languages such as Thai [13] and Malay.[14] In the case of Vietnam, Disney added a Vietnamese subtitle for most of the anime. It is worth noting that Disney Channel Asia also aired Perman's Malay Dubs for its programming in Malaysia as of 2014. [15]
Both the Intro and Outro of Chimpui were dubbed into English by SDI Media. Although several of the anime did not have this benefit, such as Ninja Hattori,[16] where the Disney Channel Asia broadcast used Japanese lyrics for the Intro according with clips of the Vietnamese broadcast.
Additionally, Disney Channel Asia also produced Indonesian dubs for Chimpui and Ninja Hattori. [17] Chimpui's Indonesian Dub featured work by voice actor Mirna Haryati where in October 2012 she had announced that she was recording part of the lines for the anime. Additionally, in May 2013, the website “KAORI Nusantara” reported that Endang Ayu had participated in the Indonesian dubbing of Chimpui.

A big thanks to Josheb Salao, he has previously worked with SDI Media for the dubbing of certain series and he has confirmed the credits of the Philippine dubbing of Chimpui; where Clarisse Castelo plays Eri Kasuga while the aliens of Chimpui and Wanderyu were dubbed by Aireen Sigaya-Bondoc and Jun Villaroman respectively. Also regarding Eri Kasuga's friends, Mark Muñoz played Uchiki Sho and Aireen Sigaya-Bondoc played Sunemi Koganeyama. And finally the general antagonists were voiced by Jun Villaroman for Masao Oeyama and Aireen Sigaya-Bondoc for Masao Koyama.
